Welcome to Blogging 101 for Science Online 2010 (#scio10)

In this session, you will learn how to set up a blog; create and publish posts with text, audio, and video; personalize settings; and connect your blog with a larger community. The materials and links below may help you as you get started.

There are two blogs set up as a place for us to experiment: one in Blogger and one in WordPress. Contact me to be added to these blogs. Once you are added, feel free to edit them in any way you like. You can also return to the ScienceOnline 2010 Blogging 101 Page if you would like to post your questions and comments there.

What is a "Blog"? Why would I want one?

Getting Started

There are lots of blogging platforms out there. The two most popular are Blogger and WordPress. Which one should you use? There's no right or wrong. Just like some people are PC and some are Mac...sometimes you feel like a nut (and sometimes you don't)...the variations in these tools allows you to pick whichever suits your needs best. By giving each one a try in our lab spaces linked below, you'll have a better idea about which one you might choose for a more permanent space.

There are many comparisons of the two platforms available online (e.g. this post from Pulsed). Keep in mind that if you choose one and change your mind later, it is usually not a big deal. Most platforms will allow you to export and import information from other platforms. Your blog can grow and move with you.
